Notre
Dame of Saint Cordon in Valenciennes. (recorded
as a historical monument)
In
1008 Valenciennes was striken by a plague.On 7th
September hundreds of people witnessed a particular
happening: the Virgin came and unwound a red
thread around the city in order to bind the devil.
The Virgin appeared again to give the following
message:"The cord shows the walking you have to
accomplish as a procession to cure the plague.
You'll just have to restart it every year on the day
of my birth's celebration so that you keep being
protected agaisnt the devil." The valenciennois
have been respecting this tradition since then, and
for almost 1000 years, around 8th September, Notre

center.
